The Shield, also known to some as WHYTRI and others as Dimitri, officially released his EP Hot Boy Baby.
The three-song release serves as the latest from WHYTRI, following his previous project, A Bad Porno. Though the project is short, he packs in a wide range of production, flows and transitions.
HBB’s work kicked off in July, WHYTRI said. The idea behind making this release an EP rather than a full-length project was pretty simple. He said he feels as though he just grasped the ability to put out those kinds of projects and moving forward that’s the direction he’s going to take.
The songs on HBB could have easily found themselves on ABP, But WHYTRI said they wouldn’t have sounded the same and so he’s treating this release like a DLC to ABP.
The project was entirely written, recorded, produced, mixed and mastered by WHYTRI with the exception of one beat that he worked with Nick Costa on. The project’s theme, however, he wanted to maintain the feel that his fans have grown to love.
“I just wanted to go with a smoother more laid back aesthetic,” he said “Nobody has that more than Hugh Hefner, so inspiration definitely [has been] Hugh Hefner, James Brown and Big Daddy Kane for the visual concepts. Sonically I was just wanted to put out some bops before my sonic shift happens.”
The shift he mentions is the next plateau for the artist. Though he loves his sound, he said everything is changing after this and the HBB era will be at it’s close. With the energies built from ABP and HBB, WHYTRI has definitely not hit his peak as an artist and we’re excited to see what comes next.
