Thundercat releases his newest album
Following his 2015 EP release “The Beyond / Where the Giants Roam,” Thundercat returns with his third full-length studio album, “Drunk.”
Being an artist whose talent spreads across a multitude of genres makes it difficult to nail any one sound to the 32-year-old Thundercat–born Stephen Bruner; not to be confused with the ThunderCats series. Thundercat, whose third album Drunk released today, has had an extensive career with big-name artists both behind the scenes and in the limelight and this album is no different.
Drunk features the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Pharrell, Wiz Khalifa, Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins across 23 tracks. The album is being released through Brainfeeder–the record label started in 2008 by Los Angeles artist Flying Lotus. Between his last full-length album and this current release, Thundercat released a six-song EP, The Beyond / Where the Giants Roam, that received positive reviews.
The Los Angeles-based artist told Now Toronto that the album cover, featuring Thundercat almost completely under water, was a challenge to “convey the idea [of Drunk] with the seriousness but at the same time the silliness.” He also told NT that he doesn’t drink and when he did he said it was fun, but the idea of Drunk is that “it’s something that describes the feeling of what’s going on now.
“Everyone just sounds crazy.”
His collaborations with artists such as Lamar, Flying Lotus, Kamasi Washington, Erykah Badu, Childish Gambino, Terrace Martin and many others, Thundercat’s portfolio continues to evolve. From serious to confusing to silly and totaling less than an hour, listen to Drunk below.
