Some members of Top Dawg Entertainment haven’t released new projects in years, 2016 is looking to change that.
The TDE camp released a song last night after music streaming service Tidal alluded to new music being revealed on Twitter.
Thought it wasn’t originally clear who the artist in question was–not that there had been one named–speculation narrowed it down to the four artists who haven’t released a project in a while. Isaiah Rashad, SZA, ScHoolboy Q and Ab-Soul haven’t released a project in at least a year. Looking at the whiteboard of information Top posted on his Instagram, SZA and Isaiah Rashad could, naturally, be removed from the thought process as they were both in the creative stage of their music. ScHoolboy Q and Ab-Soul were closest to being done as they had music in sample clearance and mixing, respectively.
Just before Tidal tweeted that there would be new music, Top Dawg tweeted asking if it was cool if he released new music that night.
i will drop something when my plane touchdown in LA 2nite… kool?

Look out for a new TDE release on TIDAL tonight…

Presumably after touching down, Top Dawg tweeted what was thought to be the only release of the night. The new song, “Groovy Tony,” by ScHoolboy Q, premiered through Tidal–a somewhat of a different approach, as it’s not particularly clear what the TDE-Tidal connection is. Promptly after releasing the link for the song, Top Dawg released the link for a video to accompany the song.

It’s not clear whether “Groovy Tony” is a single off of an upcoming album, or if it was released just as a single. Nonetheless, no complaints are made when it’s a song from an artist who hasn’t released much music since his last album, Oxymoron.
