Afeni Shakur, Mother of Tupac Shakur, Has Passed Away at 69

The mother of the late artist Tupac Amaru Shakur died yesterday in Northern California.

According to the Marin County Sheriff Department’s Twitter account, deputies responded to a call last night around 9:30 p.m.

Born Alice Faye Williams in 1947, Shakur changed her name while a member of the Black Panthers–a “revolutionary black nationalist and socialist organization active in the United States from 1966 until 1982.” As a member of the Black Panthers, she served close to a year in prison while also having been pregnant with her son, Tupac, who would go on to be a renown artist. she was a member of the Black Panthers and served 11 months in prison, during which time she was pregnant with the future rap star.

The year after her son was shot and killed in California, Afeni started the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation using profits from the sales of his albums. She’s since made appearances throughout the United States in the form of lectures and other philanthropic events.

45s and 40s reached out to the Marin County Sheriff department and did not hear back at the time of writing.
